MEDIATION
a method of settling disputes outside of a court setting; the
imposition of a neutral THIRD PARTY (see party) to act as a link between the parties; similar to
arbitration and conciliation. See also
alternative dispute resolution. Compare negotiation.
EXAMPLE: Sara and Henry wish to obtain a divorce. Hoping to avoid undue
litigation and emotional trauma, they secure the help of a professional divorce mediator, who attempts a mediation of their affairs.
